BABIES AND OTHER HAZARDS OF SEX: HOW TO MAKE A TINY PERSON IN ONLY 9 MONTHS WITH TOOLS YOU PROBABLY HAVE AROUND THE HOUSE

Author: Dave Barry

Publisher/Manufacturer: Rodale Press

There is nothing inspirational or dewy-eyed about this book and its point of view on bringing new life into the world, but it's guaranteed to give new parents a good laugh or two, which is just as important. This is a classic, written in 1984, but the humor has survived intact, from the description (and sketch) of the "standard childbirth position" to the author's suspicion that preoccupied infants are actually receiving messages from outer space.

Syndicated columnist Dave Barry wrote this book in his salad days, some 20 years ago, after the birth of his son. It is no deeper than a comic book, and consistently amusing in a juvenile sort of way. But it's never raunchy, and you can read between the lines to see that the author may spoof, but he has an abiding affection for babies and the people who bring them into the world. That's why he wants you to know how to endure baby showers and to expect your baby to howl with rage when you won't let her eat the pizza crust left in the shopping mall public ashtray.
